Frankie Valli

My Eyes Adored You

At No.12, on “The Top 50 UK Singles Chart”, the week of my 3rd Birthday, is Frankie Valli with My Eyes Adored You.

Another of my absolute favourites..

…sits at this position this week. One which I remember very fondly indeed, and also a single which my sister Susan owned.

For Frankie,..

…who hadn’t had a solo hit since the dawn of the decade, it was also a commercial lifeline back from the abyss, and even more so for The Four Seasons who also appear on this track. As a collective, the last time they’d hit the UK singles chart had been back at the beginning of 1967.

Although this single was released as a solo effort, all to do with internal politics on this newly established label Frankie had signed to, the band can clearly be heard supporting him throughout. In fact, it would be this single which would kick-start a whole new modern era for the group together, and would also bolster Frankie’s solo efforts as the decade progresses.

For me personally,..

…the single carries such warmth. The story it tells, the ease with which it flows, and just by its sheer evocative beauty, it in itself has become timeless.

It’s a track which, if it was ever cued up and played on the radio, anyone who remembers it from this time would collectively all let go of any tension they were carrying, and just for a moment, live out their own bygone dream which the song narrates so eloquently and effectively; and sung by one of the true greats, from songs on that same radio over the years gone by.

I may only have been 3, but I knew already that this was a great song, and in my world, and I’m sure many will agree with me, it has become a classic.

The single…

…makes its entrance on the 26th of January at No.39, and by the beginning of February the following week, it begins its ascent up the UK chart, first climbing up to No.31, then last week leaping ten further places to No.21. This week it gains another nine to land at this position.

From here…

…it finishes off this month, and closes off winter, by breaking into the Top 10 to reach No.7; and as it travels into March and the start of spring, it covers even more ground to hit the Top 5 at No.5.

The following week sees it begin its journey back, first slipping just one place, before gaining more momentum, until it reaches the same position it came in at, and then leaving for good after the 12th of April.
