Marie Osmond

Paper Roses

At No.44, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart”, the week of my 2nd Birthday, is Marie Osmond with Paper Roses.

The hits from the Osmonds just keep on coming.

We’ve already witnessed hits from Jimmy, Donny, and the brothers (without little Jimmy) as a collective. This time it’s their young sister Marie’s turn to step into the limelight.

Born four years before Jimmy, Marie was the only daughter to parents George and Olive. In fact, Marie is actually the middle name of the Osmond brothers’ only sister. She actually has the christian name of her mother, Olive.

Not only…

…was this Marie’s first single to be released, but also the first she ever recorded.

A cover of a tune which originally charted way back in June 1960 by American singer, and Miss Oklahoma winner of 1958, Anita Bryant. At that time, it reached No.24 in the UK when baby Olive Marie Osmond was just 8 months old. Now, 13 years later, it was her time to shine in her own right as “Marie Osmond”.

Marie’s version of the song…

…entered the UK chart at No.24 on the 11th of November 1973; less than a month after her 15th birthday.

By the following week, some of that Osmond magic dust had definitely sprinkled on her singing career prospects, sending the single soaring up the charts, into the Top 10, all the way up to No.3 where it would stay for a couple of weeks as the year turned to December, before the single floated up another tier to reach No.2, where it would stall; only being denied the top spot by Gary Glitter.

It would spend the rest of the year in the Top 10, before showing signs that it may begin to fall away further after the first week in this new year of 1974; although it would jump back into that hierarchy once more, to sit at No.8 in the middle of the month of January, before beginning its steady decent in earnest down the charts.

For now, this week will be the single’s final one, leaving an impressive total of 15 solid consecutive weeks to show for it.

Not bad for a debut single at all.
