Fox

Only You Can

At No.19, on “The Top 50 UK Singles Chart”, the week of my 3rd Birthday, is Fox with Only You Can.

It’s second time lucky…

…for this debut single from a new band, put together by the well-established American musician, producer and songwriter Kenny Young, who’d had quite a bit of success in the past decade with some co-written compositions you may well recognise.

It was after…

…Kenny’s 3-year professional partnership with Clodagh Rodgers came to a natural close, that he decided to form this new band, and brought in Susan Traynor, an Australian singer he’d previously worked with on various projects.

For this new phase in her career, Susan decided on a change of image and name. Modelling herself in the likeness of the classic film actress Marlene Dietrich, she decided to go by the name Noosha Fox.

The contrasting and alluring…

…presence of Noosha seemed to be just the captivation the group needed to connect with an audience. Personally, I feel the presence and sound of her vocal, on this single was a precursor to artists such as Kate Bush. I can imagine that Kate herself may have had this single in her record collection.

The first time they released the single though, at the time just called “Only You” back in the previous summer of 1974, it didn’t go anywhere. It’s only now, and after extending the title, that it is finally getting the attention it deserves.

The single…

…had just managed to make it into the UK chart last week, placing itself at No.50, before leaping up an impressive thirty-one places in one jump, to land at this position this week.

From here…

…it will take another huge jump and make the Top 5, before moving up a notch to No.4 to begin the spring month of March, sitting there for a fortnight, and then reaching the Top 3 during the middle of that month as the clocks welcome back British Summer Time.

As April arrives, during the Easter Bank Holiday, so the single drops back out of the Top 10 and makes its way back through the chart, eventually returning back to where it started at No.50, and then leaving altogether after the 26th, with a solid 11 weeks to take with it.
