Dean Parrish
I’m On My Way

At No.43, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart”, the week of my 3rd Birthday, is Dean Parrish with I’m On My Way.
One of the biggest…
…Northern Soul gems presides over this position this week which, in an unfortunate twist of fate, completely passed this artist by at the time.
It’s also not the first time one of these types of niche singles has crossed my path along my own musical road, having included Robert Knight in the chart rundown during my previous birthday week.
Back in the mid-1960s,..
…Dean had been having some moderately solid success back over in his native USA. However, by the time of this song’s original release, he’d basically decided on a change of artistic direction and, reverting back to his actual name of Philip Anastasi, decided to pursue an acting career going forwards.
Unbeknownst to Philip,..
…a few short years later, and over the pond in the north of England, a new following was beginning to crop up which would prove illustrious to him, if only someone could have tracked him down at the time.
Northern Soul was becoming a huge musical movement over here in the UK, with clubs entertaining the ever-growing crowds who wanted to escape from the drab real world and let their hair down. Along with Manchester‘s Twisted Wheel, Droitwich‘s Chateau Impney, Wolverhampton‘s Catacombs, and Tunstall‘s Golden Torch, there was now a new venue which would end up rising higher than all of them.
The Casino Club in Wigan,..
…known simply by the movement as The Wigan Casino, had been gaining notoriety for quite a while by this point, with a big part of its success being due to their own ever-popular all-nighters; and it was due to these monumental dusk-till-dawn marathons, and its award-winning DJ Russ Winstanley, which solidified the big success of this single, being the regular closer to “The 3 Before 8” segment, sending the party people back out through the doors to the dawn of a brand new day.
In fact, as the whole era of this golden age of dance-clubs would eventually run its natural course in future years, this particular floor-filler would become highly significant; and it will be even longer before Philip (once the link had finally been made to his alter-ego Dean) would be finally tracked down, and be made aware of how much his soulful voice had made an impact to such a huge following.
For now though,..
…let’s go back to this heady time when this already solid staple is finally getting noticed enough to appear across the whole of the UK charts.
The single…
…had entered the UK Top 50 on the 2nd this month at No.48, last week had climbed up to No.42 before slipping a place this week.
From here,..
…it bounces back next week and climbs inside the Top 40 to land at its highest position of No.38, before it falls back to No.44, then leaves the chart altogether after the 8th of March, although its true legacy will continue onwards for years to come.
