Something For The Girl With Everything

At No.28, on “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart”, the week of my 3rd Birthday, is Sparks with Something For The Girl With Everything.

The amount of…

…descriptive superlatives is never enough for this brotherly bond, who at this point are only just emanating the first ripples of their unconventional artistic prowess.

At this point of my turning 3, I’d probably known about them for around the last half a year, due to their jolting impact they’d made, not just to me, but I’m sure to the majority of the British public in general with their breakthrough hit “This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us“.

When they did appear, it was literally the look of them which unnerved me, especially Ron, with that stare out of the TV which seemed to be reaching into my own soul, never mind his brother Russell who was prancing around like some flared-trousered labradoodle and singing in such a bizarre way, which to me, felt completely incompatible to anything I’d witnessed before, it sounded more like he was chanting delirious incantations, all the while being completely possessed by his moustached evil brother, who was in some devilish way, pulling his strings. The genius of it all terrified me.

Back then,..

…and for many years afterwards, I never really delved too deep into their personal blend of clever, convoluted, obscure, and enigmatic musical concoctions. I didn’t even know they were related, or that they were from the West Coast of the United States, assuming instead that they were from some obscure European sect which deemed them cool. I don’t know – somewhere like Belgium.

In fact, it was probably only when entering this new millennium, that I even dared to edge anywhere back near them to scratch the surface any further; and it was only then I realised how completely wrong I’d been about them back in my infancy.

A missed opportunity?..

…Well, in one way, yes, but what could I do at such a young age? Not much. I suppose if my sister Susan had taken that route, and added this to her ever expanding collection of singles, I may have taken more notice, but this really wasn’t her type of thing at all.

In hindsight, it was most probably a case of myself being born too late for them. If I’d been in my teens when they broke onto the mainstream TV I would have found myself both captivated and fascinated in equal measure. Instead, I came at them from a far more indirect angle, but then that’s the compelling thing when you get to discover gems like these two shiny diamonds, who, to me, had been hiding in plain sight for years, before my gaze fell back towards them in my adulthood.

So for those still to discover these two absolute marvels of musical maniacal brilliance, please use this single as a jumping off point, and dive into the intellectual abyss of the more incomprehensible, who fly in the face of your standard conventional fare, and come out more enlightened on the other side.

The single…

…had infiltrated the chart on the 12th of January at No.44, and by week 2, had leapt up 26 places, into the Top 20, to sit at No.18.

Although the end of that month witnessed it fall back out of that tier and settle at No.22, by the first week of February, it was back and had jumped higher, to sit at a new peak position of No.17.

Slipping back once again last week to No.23, it seems this time it may be running out of steam, as it falls further this week.

From here…

…it drops dramatically, and clings on for one last week at the very edge of the Top 50, before the writing is well and truly on the wall, and it drives off fast and far after the first day of March, with 6 weeks scrawled behind it in ball-point pen to remember it by.
