Simon And Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits

Simon & Garfunkel

At No.8, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Albums Chart”, the week of my 2nd Birthday, are Simon & Garfunkel with Simon And Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits.

On the surface,..

…this post could almost look like a carbon copy of the post from the last time this album featured during my previous birthday week, with this retrospective collection occupying a position in the Top 10, and with their last studio album still making a respectable appearance further down the same chart. In fact, since that moment, exactly a year before, this album seems to have moved a grand total of only two spaces back in the past twelve months.

To me personally, I feel this is because the audience this was intended for, the ones who lived and breathed this music in the preceding decade, felt that the music of today just wasn’t up to par with the quality and feeling, the atmosphere and emotion, that these two talented individuals provided. It was most probably getting passed on to a younger generation, who themselves were impelled to buy their own copies, as they had grown up with these songs when hearing them around the house from their own parent’s or relative’s collections, who may have had the original singles or albums they came from.

Whatever the reason, with these songs, even with their later ones featured, were approaching at least half a decade in age now; most of them much older than that. That’s how something begins to get passed from one generation to the next.

The album,..

…since I’d last left its journey at the close of last year in 1973, was at that point floating around, inside and outside the Top 20.

As it enters into this year of 1974, and continues its winter travels through and into the first month of January, the album heats up enough to climb back towards the Top 10, eventually climbing back in as the month gives way to this month of February, when, as it did almost a year before, hits No.6; and as it approaches this week of my birthday, jostles gently in the lower end of this highest of positions, which is where I find it here for my 2nd birthday.

From here,..

…it will travel ever onwards, settling into various mid-chart placements as spring finally breaks back through from mid-March, through into the summer, climbing up as high as No.11 as the season gives way to the autumn month of September, then receding back once again as winter eventually comes round once again by the end of this year, where the album hangs back into the mid-30 positions in anticipation for what lies ahead into the following year.

And as I predicted back when I first met this album last year, this long standing accomplishment continues; and this album, just like its predecessor, carries steadily on its extraordinary chart run.

So I’ll catch up with it into another year in my own future.
