At No.32, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Albums Chart”, the week of my 2nd Birthday, are Simon And Garfunkel with Bridge Over Troubled Water.
The unbroken run…
…of this album continues, and for only the third time in it’s chart run so far, I find it here just outside the Top 30.
The duo…
…had been back together over the last couple of years, when they’d reunited for a presidential candidate benefit concert in the summer of 1972, but apart from that, they’d carried on their separate ways.
Paul had now released two solo albums; one which has already featured in the chart on the day of my birth. Art had finished a couple of films early in this album’s run and had then dipped into a mathematics teaching career, before returning to music and recording his own solo album last year in 1973.
The album,..
…since the last time we left it at the end of 1973, was still sitting comfortably in those mid-chart positions by the time I get to this week in February 1974.
From here,..
…the it will shoot back up to No.15 next week where it will stay for a fortnight, before heading back to this area again.
Spring will come and go, so will the summer; but as autumn comes around, so things begin to get a bit shaky. The album drops unexpectedly lower until, just like a leaf that has clung to the bough for too long, it finally lets go; and so ends an extraordinary unbroken run which has lasted for four years and 36 weeks without a break.
It should come as no surprise…
…to know that it was out, but it was not down. This would not be the end of this album’s journey, and sure enough, I will catch up with it again when I revisit the chart on another birthday.
I’ve created my own separate playlists for both Sides 1 and 2 of this album with (I hope) the correct versions and the original track sequencing order for the U.K. release.
