Shirley & Company

Shame, Shame, Shame

At No.7, on “The Top 50 UK Singles Chart”, the week of my 3rd Birthday, is Shirley & Company with Shame, Shame, Shame.

A single which is…

…already becoming a staple for any party, disco and any other feel-good festivity. This one seems to be hitting all the right buttons.

Shirley is Shirley Mae Goodman, and although the vast majority will think she is a new sensation who is riding the wave of this new Disco movement as it comes to shore, she is in fact quite the experienced veteran who has already tasted significant success when, as still a teenager, and as half of the duo Shirley & Lee, she’d celebrated success with the single “Let The Good Times Roll“, which had sold over a million units, almost twenty years before. A song which has been covered numerous times since, and has actually appeared on albums which have already crossed my own musical road in the past few years.

The “Company”…

…consisted of duetting vocalist Jesus Alvarez plus a plethora of high quality musicians, with the much revered Seldon Powell contributing his tenor saxophone prowess in the instrumental break.

The song itself had apparently been initially sidelined for label-mate, and an artist who has already featured twice on my own musical journey, Donnie Elbert, but for one reason or another it was instead gifted by the label’s co-owner to Jesus, who then teamed him up with Shirley.

It turned out to become an inspired pairing, and the song itself would end up bewitching the music buying public enough for them to delve into their pockets and purchase this single in their droves, and keeping their feet moving on the dancefloors everywhere. It very soon after, also motivated other artists to emulate it, cover it, and bring it into their own musical repertoires, including a rendition performed this same year by Cher and Tina Turner amongst many others, all of them helping to keep the Bo Diddley-inspired rhythm relevant far into the future, where it will subsequently be welcomed by whole new generations for many years to come.

The single…

…had entered the chart a couple of weeks ago at the beginning of this month of February on the 2nd, at No.38, before leaping twenty-three places to land last week at No.15, before then jumping straight into the Top 10 this week at this position.

From here…

…it will climb one notch higher, and hit a peak position next week of No.6, before slipping back to this week’s position at the beginning of March, and where it starts to fall away throughout that month, finally dance, dance, dancing out of the chart altogether after the 5th of April.
