Peters & Lee
‘By Your Side‘

At No.47, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Album Chart”, the week of my 2nd Birthday, are Peters & Lee with ‘By Your Side‘.
The popular singing duo…
…are still riding a successful wave of momentum, since enjoying tremendous popularity, and capturing the TV audience’s hearts, with their triumphant performances week upon week on the popular show Opportunity Knocks last year in 1973.
Lennie and Dianne,..
…who had topped the bill at the Royal Variety Performance, in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, back in November last year in 1973, are following up with this second long player together, which had been released a few weeks after that esteemed highlight, to take advantage of the Christmas market.
The Album…
…had entered into the Top 30 just over a week before Christmas Day, on the 16th of December 1973, at No.26; a position it would hold onto for the following week.
The results of the Christmas push would become more evident in it’s third week, as the LP climbed up into the Top 20 to sit ten places higher at No.16.
As it entered into this New Year of 1974, although it dropped a some heavy steps back down through the placements, it never left the chart, and steady sales would keep it sitting happily inside the Top 50 which is where I meet it here in February.
From here,..
…it will carry on with this routine behaviour before a surge in sales sends the album up into the Top 10 for a week, to sit at No.9, at the end of May. After which, it drops slowly back down the chart through the summer months and well into autumn, before it disappears after the 5th of October; reappearing for one further week, and almost a year since it first appeared, at the beginning of December.
Going into next year of 1975, the album re-enters for a 2nd time just before the New Year celebrations, now doubt due to more Christmas sales, and spends a further three weeks in the chart before leaving again after the 18th of January.
It then finishes off with three separate week-long appearances just outside the Top 40, in early February, mid-March and finally early April, leaving for good after the 5th of that month; having spent just three weeks shy of a year of chart action in total.
