The Chi-Lites
Have You Seen Her
At No.6, on the the U.K. Top 50 Singles Chart the day I am born, is The Chi-Lites with “Have You Seen Her”.
The Chi-Lites were still enjoying their residency in the Top 10 this week.
Having peaked into the Top 3 last week, they’ve now fallen back to No.6 and will stay there for next week too, rounding out 5 solid weeks in the Top 10.
The group’s history, at this point, goes back 13 years to 1959,..
…when most of the group were still at Hyde Park Academy High School in Chicago.
The lead vocalist and chief songwriter Eugene Record, along with his singing friend Robert Lester, attended the Englewood High School.
Singer and musician Marshall Thompson eventually moved from the Hyde Park Academy to DuSable High School, where he was tutored in music by inspirational music educator Walter Dyett, who you only needed to read the impressive list of icons who’d studied in his name, to see how accomplished a teacher he was. Such talent as Bo Diddley, Dinah Washington, George Freeman and Nat King Cole just to name a fraction of the talent, that benefited from this enriching musical director.
Initially calling themselves The Chanteurs,..
…they released a single written by member Clarence Johnson called ” You’ve Got A Great Love” in 1963.
About a year later,..
…after a few different departures and arrivals, the group changed their name to The Hi-Lites and released another single “I’m So Jealous”.
Unfortunately,..
…they soon found that the name had already been taken by another group, so in homage to their home city, they first changed the name to Marshall and the Chi-Lites…
…but after member Clarence Johnson departed,..
…they decided in the end to shorten the name down to the now familiar name of The Chi-Lites.
Since that final name change,..
…the group had scored a few lower ranking hits in the U.S., but nothing had landed here until late last Summer in 1971, when they entered the U.K. Charts for the first time with the dynamic “(For God’s Sake) Give More Power to the People”.
Hoping to build on that initial breakthrough,..
…this next single hit the chart on the 9th of January this year of 1972 at No.40, bounded up to No.27 for it’s 2nd week, before leaping up a further 10 places to No.17, then flying another 10 places, to land inside the Top 10 at No.7 as it enters into this month of February.
A small jump to No.5, and then then a climb of two more places takes it to its peak position of No.3 last week, until it comes down to this week’s No.6, where it will stay until the beginning of March, before accepting its fate and falling away further.
In the end, the single will complete a 12 week stay of the chart, from the 9th of January. until it walks away after the first day of April.
