Hot August Night

Neil Diamond

At No.41, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Albums Chart” on my 1st Birthday, is Neil Diamond with “Hot August Night”.

Another live album makes it into the U.K. Album Chart while I turn 1,..

…and it seems this one gains more legendary status with each passing year.

Captured on the 24th of August the previous year of 1972, during a 10-day sold-out run of shows at the Greek Theatre, Los Angeles, which perfectly captured the energy of Neil’s performance that night.

The double album which this produced, landed last week at No.31 on the 11th of February 1973 but this week drops ten places.

However, next week he’ll bounce back higher to achieve his highest chart position when he hits No.21.

He’ll then take placings in the 30’s, then the 20’s, before falling back into the 40’s and then taking his first leave of absence after the 24th of March.

He’ll reappear on the first day of April, spending another three weeks in the Top 30, before another break after the 21st of April.

As Britain warms up, so Neil will make a trio of week long appearances.

The first from the 13th of May, the second from the 1st of July, and the third from the 19th of August, a year after the performances themselves.

Heading into the Autumn, they’ll be sporadic entries. Firstly two weeks from the 2nd of September, then three weeks from the 23rd of the same month, and finally, for 1973 anyway, a brief week just in at No.49 from the 28th of October.

There will be a further 3 weeks of chart action for this album, with each week getting further from the last.

The first of these will be a week at No.32 from the 6th of January the following year in 1974.

The second will be a placing at No.48 from the last day of June in the same year.

The last encore won’t be until a week beginning on the final day of July, when the album will see in another August in 1977, the chart by this time allowing an expanse enough to show a placing at No.60
