Focus
Sylvia
At No.4, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart” on my 1st Birthday, is Focus with “Sylvia”.
Same chart and another single for Focus,..
…and it was due to this track, and their appearance on the B.B.C.’s “Old Grey Whistle Test” back in the previous December of 1972, which got their other single, “Hocus Pocus” to even chart (that one had been waiting since it had been released back in 1971).
For me personally, this latest single instantly became a big favourite of mine as soon as I heard it many years later. I thought it was absolutely stunning, so to imagine what it must have sounded like in 1973 must have been mind-blowing.
“Sylvia” charted a week after Hocus Pocus…
…on the 21st of January at No.34 and by its second week was sitting just outside the Top 20 at No.21.
By its third week it had broken into the Top 10 at No.9 and then, in the week before this one, managed to get up to No.5.
This week it hits its peak position, and next week will manage to keep hold of it for a second week before slipping back to sit around the edge of the Top 10 for another couple of weeks.
After that, the drops will become longer until Focus go out of the chart after the 7th of April, having completed a more satisfying 11 weeks.
