Never A Dull Moment

Rod Stewart 1972

At No.33, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Albums Chart” on my 1st Birthday, is Rod Stewart with “Never A Dull Moment”.

Hot on the heels of Rod’s previous release…

…“Every Picture Tells A Story”, which I met during the chart run down on the day I was born, now comes his 4th album, recorded while the Faces were in a state of “splendid disarray” (to quote from Rod himself during the recording of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Angel’).

With contributions from, not only the other Faces, but also names like Ray Jackson from the group Lindisfarne, who provided the mandolin for the “Maggie May” clone “You Wear It Well”.

This new album had bounded straight in at No.5 on the 30th of July back in 1972, and by the 13th of August was banging at the door of the Top to sit at No.2 for 4 weeks behind a compilation album entitled “20 Fantastic Hits”.

This sort of thing with Various Artists compilations would get problematic, and due to the disruption they would cause, their sales would ultimately be disregarded in the early to mid-80’s when it became apparent when the “Now That’s What I Call Music” series basically topped every chart.

Eventually, Rod would get his day when he officially got to No.1 on the 10th of September for 2 weeks until being knocked off again by the same compilation (unofficially, and taking into account the rules which would be applied in around 10 years, he would have had 7 weeks at the Top Spot).

When it did slip, the album didn’t shift from the Top 10 until the 26th of November, it didn’t leave the Top 20 until well into the new year of 1973 on the 4th of February, and it didn’t leave the Top 30 until this week of my birthday, and even that was just for this week only.

Next week will see it go back in through that gate until it suddenly drops out of the the chart after the last day of March.

It’s last appearance though will be a quick peek back in for a week from the 8th of April but even though he finally leaves after the 14th, I’m sure there will be something he’s up to by then.

Never a dull moment indeed for our Rod.
