Robert Knight - Love On A Mountain Top

At No.33, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart”, the week of my 2nd Birthday, is Robert Knight with Love On A Mountain Top.

A song which took 6 years…

…to become a UK hit.

Robert, who had experienced some regional success with the song in his native United States, hailed from the city of Franklin in Williamson County, Tennessee.

He’d found some success with another song seven years previously in 1967, when he scored a Billboard Top 20 hit with “Everlasting Love“. A single which, if it had released over in the UK at that time, could have also given him a big hit over here. Instead, it was picked up by the group Love Affair, who sent it all the way to the top of the charts.

When “Love On A Mountain Top” originally released…

…back in 1968, the only U.S. areas it showed any interest was from the two largest cities in Pennsylvania; namely Philadelphia and Pittsburg.

Now, here in the early to mid-seventies, with the emergence of the Northern Soul movement, a by-product of the British Mod scene, taking up-tempo lesser known soul tunes to create a new dance movement, which pre-dates Disco and subsequently Breakdancing, this long forgotten tune is now getting a new lease of life.

The single had entered the UK Chart…

… the previous Autumn on the 18th of November 1973 at No.41, and began to climb into the Top 30 to following week at No.28.

Another couple of weeks would see the single scale up and get inside the Top 20; then, after crossing the New Year threshold into this year of 1974, would ascend further and enter the Top 10 at No.10 from the 20th of January, where it would stay for a couple of weeks, before beginning its descent back down, with this current week seeing its biggest drop so far, from last week’s No.14,

From here,..

…there will be just a couple more weeks left for its run, before it descends outside of the chart after the 9th of March, with a quite impressive 16 weeks to show for it.
