Leo Sayer
The Show Must Go On

At No.31, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart”, the week of my 2nd Birthday, is Leo Sayer with The Show Must Go On.
We have a new chap here…
…with his first chart hit; even though it wasn’t his first single.
His previous release, “Why Is Everybody Going Home”, failed to chart, so it is second time lucky for the 25 year old from the seaside town of Shoreham-by-Sea, which lays between Worthing and Brighton, on the English South Coast.
Leo had been discovered…
…while working as a porter at a hotel in Hove, adjacent to Brighton, in the late 1960’s.
Initially he started out just writing songs, rather than performing them, for which one of those became the song “Giving It All Away“; a composition that Leo (whose real name was actually Gerald, but you don’t get many Gerald’s performing in the pop music industry) was credited as a co-writer. The song would become a major hit for Roger Daltrey, who had selected it for his solo debut.
For Leo’s current single,..
…and to keep with the theme of the song, he dressed as a pierrot clown and danced and sang his way into the UK Charts for the first time.
The single…
…had entered last year on the 9th of December 1973 at No.24, and by the second week, Leo had shot like a human cannonball, straight into the Top 10 when he landed at No.7; a position from where he would stay for three weeks as the time ticked over to 1974.
Once all the Christmas singles had slipped away from their positions, so Leo’s single climbed higher; first getting to No.3 by the 6th of January, and then scaling one further place to No.2 the following week, which would end up becoming it’s peak position.
Since then, it has stayed in the Top 10 up until this week, where a big drop now lands it at this position for it’s eleventh week.
From here,..
the single will continue its fall, and the tally of weeks on the chart will continue on up to 13, until it takes a final bow and exits after the 9th of March.
