Alvin Stardust

Jealous Mind

At No.3, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart”, the week of my 2nd Birthday, is Alvin Stardust with Jealous Mind.

The second single…

…of Alvin’s; and this time round, the image matched the voice.

The Haringey borne and Mansfield raised singer; before this, Shane Fenton, before that, Bernard William Jewry, was not miming in front of a TV audience anymore, but now fully into singing the songs too.

As I’ve mentioned back at his other placing further down the chart, the previous voice of Alvin, Peter Shelley, the music business executive and joint founder of the very label his manifestation was performing for, could now step back and concentrate on the writing and producing of the singles, as well as the record label housekeeping.

With Bernard/Shane…

…now taking over the singing duties, it gave him a new opportunity to put his own stamp on the song; making the act his very own and raising the popularity bar even higher.

Borrowing heavily from the vibrant and intense but unpredictable and volatile Rock ‘n’ Roll singer Vince Taylor; the same performer who had also inspired the other Stardust (probably a distant cousin from another universe) who frequented the early seventies rock landscape. But where Ziggy embraced the more magnificently other worldly persona of Vince’s later drug induced personality, Alvin assumed the more intense moody persona from his earlier years.

Most people discovering Alvin later on could be forgiven for the assumption that the character’s attire will be a Glam seventies parody to Elvis Presley‘s black leather suit, which the King had outfitted himself for his now legendary ’68 TV Special less than six years previously, but no. Vince had carried that look off 10 years before that televised event.

So now with everything in place; the look, the moves (or lack of them), the seductively smouldering riffs, and now the right voice, it was time to bring the black outfitted assault of Alvin (mk2) to even higher zeniths than ever before.

The single…

…had placed itself into the chart just last week, when it entered at No.22 on the 10th of February, and this week sees it skyrocket an impressive 19 places to secure this Top 3 position.

From here,..

…it will gain a further place next week to take the No.2 position, and as it enters the first week of March, Alvin will ascend to achieve the ultimate position at No.1, to stand proudly like a modern-day colossus of rock, at the very top of the chart.

From there, he will slide back to No.2 before stepping back further to spend a last week in the Top 10 at No.5.

The rest of March and beyond will witness ever decreasing placements until, after the 27th April, the single will depart the chart with 11 solid weeks; satisfied that this member of the Stardust name has made a higher hit on the UK singles chart than his spaceman relative ever will.
