The New Seekers
Featuring Lyn Paul
You Won’t Find Another Fool Like Me

At No.27, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart”, the week of my 2nd Birthday, are The New Seekers Featuring Lyn Paul with You Won’t Find Another Fool Like Me.
For the third time…
…in as many years, this immensely popular group attend the UK Singles Chart during my birthday week.
A couple of things had changed…
…since their last visit.
The first was that Peter had left the band, to be replaced by another Peter.
Australian Peter Doyle had decided to take on a new adventure as a solo performer and songwriter which could be more personally and financially rewarding. In his place stepped Peter Oliver from Southampton, England, who was welcomed into the group during the previous summer of 1973.
The second change was the way the group now presented themselves on their subsequent recordings and releases. So, from now on, whoever sang the lead vocal on any given track, would now be “featured” on the label. For this particular release, the lead has gone to Lyn Paul, the first time she’d led on a UK charting single on her own.
This single…
…had quietly entered the chart last autumn on the 18th of November 1973 at No.37. By its second week, there was a notable raise of interest as it rocketed up the chart and leapt straight into the Top 10 at No.7. However, there could have been an underlying reason for this, which I will touch upon later.
The following week, it climbed even further, clambering up to get to the No.3 position, and later managing to hang in the Top 5, while being constantly bombarded by all the Glam artists, fighting amongst themselves for the Christmas No.1 jackpot.
Once the Glam clamour had subsided after the New Year celebrations, they resumed their climb; first to No.2, before achieving their hard fought reward by becoming the UK’s No.1 single of the week from the 13th of January 1974.
Athough the single spent only one week at the top, it would still sell so many units, that it would remain in the Top 10 for 11 weeks in a row.
Going back to the start of this single’s chart run,..
…it was around this time, amongst all this activity, that the unfortunate news broke that both Eve Graham and Lyn had also made the decision to leave. Again, management of the group’s finances, or the reality of the lack of monetary reward may have been a contributing factor; however, the main desire was probably more to do with seeking (pun intended) new career horizons for both ladies, but there was a slight snag.
Due to a clause in the contract which stated that only one member could leave at any one time, the ultimate decision was made, and announced to the press, that the group as a whole would therefore be disbanding, so as to set free the latest departures.
With their loyal followers undoubtedly extremely saddened by the news, the only way they could show their appreciation, and possibly perform a miracle and try to get the girls to just maybe think twice about the split and reverse their decision, was to buy their records.
With their new album about to go on sale, which will be the final release while the group exists, aptly titled “Together“, this single began its descent back down the chart.
From here,..
…the single will finally leave after the 9th of March with the satisfaction that it had beaten all the others to get to the top, and will have spent 16 weeks in the chart in total at the time of its departure.
Just as their predecessors The Seekers had done all those years before, the group have nothing left to prove. They are leaving at the top of their game, with the adoring crowds wanting more.
