Elvis Presley

I Just Can’t Help Believin’

Elvis Presley

At No.24, on the the U.K. Top 50 Singles Chart the day I am born, is Elvis Presley with “I Just Can’t Help Believin’”.

The 36 year old Elvis…

…was fully jump suited up by this stage and happily (for now) performing shows in Vegas.

This track (one of my personal favourites) entered the UK Chart on the 28th November 1971 at No.41.

A song written by the renowned husband and wife team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, who had been writing hit songs since 1961 including…

…”Bless You”, which was a Top 5 hit for Tony Orlando in the autumn of 1961…

…”Conscience”,..

…which became a Top 30 hit for James Darren in the summer of 1962…

…”On Broadway”,..

…which was a big hit twice stateside, for the Drifters in the spring of 1963, and will also be again for George Benson in the spring of 1978, but surprisingly never a hit here in the U.K….

…”You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin'”,..

…which was a No.1 hit for 2 weeks in February 1965. And also a No.2 hit for Cilla Black a couple of weeks before. And it will be a small Top 50 hit for Telly Savalas in 1975, a minor Top 60 hit for Daryl Hall and John Oates in 1980, and will again be a big hit for the Righteous Brothers in 1990 when it gets into the Top 3 at Christmas…

…”We Gotta Get Out Of This Place”,..

…which became a Top 2 hit for the Animals in the summer of 1965 and which will scrape into the Top 100 in 1990 when they remix the song. It will also be a minor hit for the Angelic Upstarts in the spring of 1980…

…and “It’s Getting Better”,..

…which spent two weeks in the Top 10 in the autumn of 1969 for Mama Cass.

“I Just Can’t Help Believin'”…

…had originally been a hit stateside for B.J. Thomas in the summer of 1970,..

…and it was around this time…

…that Elvis performed the song at the International Hotel in Las Vegas, where this recording was captured on the 11th of August of that year.

It would be another 15 months…

…before the single would be released here in the U.K., and after climbing steadily up through the Christmas season, Elvis finally broke the Top 10 on the 2nd of January 1972, and managed to get to No.6 by the 16th, where he stayed for 2 weeks.

From there, the single gradually slipped back down, and in a few weeks will complete a respectable 16 weeks after it departs after the 18th of March.
