Jesus Christ Superstar (A Rock Opera)

Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice

At No.24, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Albums Chart” on the day I am born, is Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice with “Jesus Christ Superstar (A Rock Opera)”.

So, we’ve had the first single to be banned by the B.B.C. in my lifetime…

…(Paul McCartney’s new band Wings took that honour)…

49: Wings – Give Ireland Back To The Irish

…and now it’s the turn of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber to provide the album.

The grounds for this ban was due to the content of the album being “Sacrilegious” apparently.

Still, being banned by the Beeb isn’t a bad thing, just ask Frankie Goes To Hollywood and, just like them, this album benefitted from such a fate as well.

And all topped off with a stellar cast, with names such as Yvonne Elliman before her Saturday Night Fever, Ian Gillan just before he went Deep Purple and Murray Head way before he spent One Night in Bangkok.

As the year of 1972 was just beginning, so this album began its journey too, just after New Year’s Day.

It’s highest position would arrive in it’s 3rd week with a placing at No.6 in January.

By this week in February 1972 we find the pair’s God Prog Rock Opera approaching its midway point of an initial 17 week run in the UK Album Charts.

From here, it will carry on it’s presence in the chart before departing after Easter in the last week of April.

It will make a further weeks appearance at the end of July before departing again for a few weeks.

It’s final resurrection will happen in a final 2 week stay as the end of August would fall into the beginning of September.
