Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes

The Love I Lost

At No.24, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart”, the week of my 2nd Birthday, are Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes with The Love I Lost.

A song which was initially,..

…intended to be a lavish ballad, just like their previous single which had shown up for my last birthday, except this latest number ended up instead as an uptempo funk number; predicting the things to come with Disco.

This one is also another example…

…where these types of tracks were outgrowing the standard format of the 7-inch single, and was another prime contender of the 12-inch single format, which at this stage of chart music, just hadn’t taken hold yet, but would soon become a reality.

Until then, as will be witnessed in the next couple of years, the track would be split in half and put on both sides of the standard 7-inch format instead.

The band themselves…

…were in their golden age.

Signed to the Philadelphia International label, with Teddy Pendergrass, who would you believe initially came on board just as a replacement drummer; but someone thankfully recognised that talent like his should not be kept behind the kit on a drum-stool, and so rightfully placed him front and centre on lead vocals; and with the power-production duo of Kenneth Gamble & Leon Huff, the band were releasing songs which are still heard on the airwaves to this very day.

This single,..

…had entered the UK Chart at the beginning of the year on the 6th of January at No.42, from where it then climbed ten places to No.32 for its second week.

By its third week, it had climbed another seven places, and then climbed again in week five to settle at a peak position of No.21, where it would stay for a fortnight, before it slipped back a little, with this week witnessing another small step back of one place.

From here,..

the single will take a more dramatic fall when it drops to No.47, before leaving the chart with a total of 8 weeks after the 2nd of March.
