Motown Memories (16 Non-Stop Tamla Hits)
At No.22, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Albums Chart” on the day I am born, is Various Tamla Motown Artists with “Motown Memories (16 Non-Stop Tamla Hits)”.
We come to the first “Various Artists” compilation in my lifetime,..
…and the honour goes to the Tamla Motown Hit Factory with an album specifically pressed for the U.K. market.
Various Artist compilations were a common thing back in the 1970’s and ’80’s when I was growing up, and it was only when the “Now That’s What I Call Music” series basically outsold everything else upon their releases that the officials stepped in and stopped their units from being counted towards UK Album Chart record sales. But that’s way into the future.
For now, these collections were allowed, and one of the most popular collections were those from the Tamla Motown label.
This was the 2nd “Memories” selection which had charted.
The first album had been all the way back in 1968 on the 4th of February.
Back then, it had got as high as No.21 and stayed within the charts for 13 weeks until the first week of May.
Now, in 1972, was it’s follow up, but for this week only, achieving only one position lower than it’s predecessor’s best effort.
It will then resurface a couple more times, and all in this same year.
The first will be next month in March for another week and the final 2 weeks will occur together at the end of the same month and see in the beginning of April.
I’ve created my own separate playlists for both Sides 1 and 2 of this album with (I hope) the correct versions and the original track sequencing order for the U.K. release.
