Gilbert O’Sullivan

Happiness Is Me And You

At No.21, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart”, the week of my 2nd Birthday, is Gilbert O’Sullivan with Happiness Is Me And You.

A stand-alone single,..

…which comes between Gilbert’s 3rd and 4th albums, occupies this position this week of my 2nd birthday.

The first years of the 1970’s had seen this singer / songwriter have tremendous, success, not just in the United Kingdom, but also in the United States; and with such accomplishment came some very deserved rewards, including three prestigious Ivor Novello’s for his prolific work so far.

Those last few years (which I’ve now witnessed while compiling the charts since my birth) had in turn been financially rewarding too. The fruits of his labours of love, had allowed him to transform from the frugal and sparse look of a young man trying to make ends meet between the wars, to now metamorphosing into an up-to-date seventies heartthrob with the threads to match.

Now, with a desire…

…to change his image once again, Gilbert had decided to take on an even smarter look; attire which reflected the achievements and matched his charismatic personality, replacing the jumpers with cutting edge suits. Along with this came even more confidence, striving to go for a more rock-oriented feel within himself too, looking to performers in that slightly more outgoing characteristic who were giving their audiences more of a show, rather than just standing there (or in Gilbert’s case, sitting at a piano).

The whole process of songwriting was now a more comfortable pastime, with a recently purchased home in the affluent area of Weybridge, England (only up the road from where I’d been brought up, but a whole planet away in terms of lifestyle); or he may be found on an artistic excursion somewhere in the Mediterranean.

With tours also being scheduled, during this abundance of activity, he therefore began to release some stand-alone singles to bridge the gap. This was one of those.

The single…

…had first charted on the 3rd of February at No.44 and then rose to break the Top 30, sitting at No.27, before a further climb up to this week’s position, just outside the Top 20.

From here,..

…the single will go on to penetrate that threshold, when it creeps up a couple of places to No.19, which will become its peak position for a couple of weeks.

As the year welcomes the spring, so Gilbert will begin his trip back down the charts; eventually landing back on the same square as when he’d entered, before departing after the 23rd of March.
