Spartacus / Gayaneh

Aram Khatchaturian

At No.18, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Albums Chart” on the day I am born, is Khatchaturian along with the Vienna Philharmonic with “Spartacus / Gayaneh”.

We now get to the first classical album to appear during my lifetime,..

…and one which was originally released back in 1962.

It took 10 years and a TV show to get it into the charts.

Khatchaturian conducting the Vienna Philharmonic performing his compositions “Spartacus” and “Gayaneh”.

Armenian composer Aram Khatchaturian’s 1954 Ballet Spartacus was having a bit of a revival due to a memorable section being the theme tune to TV’s “The Onedin Line”, that excerpt of which had been plucked to be a single and, at the same time, was currently performing just as well in the UK Singles Chart.

By this time, the album was in it’s last week of it’s initial 6 week run.

It had first entered the chart at No.47 on the 16th of January.

Last week’s chart had seen it reach the highest it would go, at No.16.

After this following week it will take a leave of absence, but not for long, and the next instalment of this album’s adventure will run up to next year where we will catch up with it then.

Due to a few of the tracks on certain albums which segue into each other, I endeavour to present the pieces as they are intended. This album is one of those cases but I have unfortunately not found an example to use, unless it takes in the whole album and not seperating into the original 2 sides of the original format.

Side 1

Khatchaturian – Vienna Philharmonic · Khatchaturian – Spartacus / Gayaneh (Side 1 Label)

Side 2

Acknowledgement goes to Vanja Stanishic who has the only channel I’ve found which has this album albeit with both sides combined. Nevertheless it gives us a chance to hear this album once again.
