Cozy Powell

Dance With The Devil

At No.17, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart”, the week of my 2nd Birthday, is Cozy Powell with Dance With The Devil.

A big hit,..

…from a superb drummer.

Cozy Powell (no relation to me as his actual name was Colin Flooks – while also being adopted, and opted never to trace his blood relatives) continues to tub-thump his way through the charts this week. He’d acquired his stage name in part from a jazz drummer he admired named William Randolph “Cozy” Cole.

Cozy had recently joined the group “Bedlam” (who themselves had also gone through a name change, and were originally known as “Beast”), but he was about to witness that band implode after just one brilliant album, mainly due to his own solo effort here.

Prior to this moment in his life,..

…Cozy had basically worked as a drum for hire, keeping time with such talent as Jeff Beck, Stevie Wonder and Ace Kefford along the way. Highly regarded, much sought after, and hugely respected; it wasn’t a surprise to find his name in the upper echelons as one of the greatest drummers in the history of the modern music age. His influences spanned everything he could shake a drumstick at.

Now working as a session musician once again, this time mainly with Mickie Most‘s rising RAK record label, Cozy first endeavored to drum for himself with this debut solo single (which also features fellow label-mate Suzi Quatro on electric bass); loosely based on the Jimi Hendrix composition “Third Stone From The Sun“, from Jimi’s debut album with The Jimi Hendrix Experience, “Are You Experienced“.

The single,..

…and Cozy’s dance with the UK Chart, began last year on the 2nd of December 1973, landing at No.46.

It managed to crawl its way into the Top 40 the following week, placing itself at No.38, before shooting straight into the Top 20 the week before Christmas, getting to No.17, and staying there for a couple of weeks, as the time ticked over to this year of 1974.

Building momentum into January, it crashed into the Top 10, reaching No.6, and then hit its peak position of No.3 as we get into this month of February. The single then spends another week in the Top 10 before it slips to this week’s position.

From here,..

…it begins to fall away more rapidly until, after amassing an impressive run of 16 consecutive weeks, it dances its way out of the chart after the 16th of March.
