Barry White

Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up

At No.14, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart”, the week of my 2nd Birthday, is Barry White with Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up.

“The Walrus of Love”,..

…as us Brits would end up affectionately calling him, is enjoying this single’s highest position this week.

Born in the coastal city of Galveston, Texas,..

…but brought up in the more impoverished African-American Watts neighborhood in the south central district of Los Angeles, California; the larger than life musical artist with a voice which someone once described as “If chocolate fudge cake could sing, it would sound like Barry White” (listening to the first 60 seconds of this song completely exemplifies that description); a voice which he’d broken into around the age of 14, shocking his mother, as well as himself in the process (well, who wouldn’t be), had already had one song chart earlier last year in 1973, but this one, the first release pulled from his second album of material “Stone Gon’“, would be the first to reach into the Top 20.

The single…

…had quietly entered into UK Top 50 at No.48, a month before on the 20th of January, and then jumped up into the Top 40 at No.32 for its 2nd week, from where it then bounced into the Top 30 to land at No.23 at the beginning of February. This week, it breaks the Top 20 to sit at this position.

From here,..

…the single begins an occupation at this placing which lasts for a further couple of weeks, and most probably trembling half the British music buying public’s knees in the process.

After that, the single will eventually slip a couple of places back to No.16 during the early spring month of March, before tumbling more purposely back through the numbers, eventually leaving Barry with a total of 11 new weeks on chart after the 6th of April, and a swathe of amorous followers in his wake, trying desperately to remember how to walk all over again.
