You’re So Vain
At No.12, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart” on my 1st Birthday, is Carly Simon with “You’re So Vain”.
On its way to becoming an absolute classic,..
…which has been so often covered but never bettered, Carly’s shout out to all the ego’s out there had just dropped out of the Top 10 this week.
Eleven weeks before, the single had entered the U.K. chart at No.39 on the 10th of December 1972.
Three weeks later it had entered the Top 20 on New Years Eve, and by its fifth week had broken the Top 10 when it landed at No.7.
The week after, it jumped a further 3 places to No.4 and, when it stalled there for a second week, it seemed that would be as high as Carly would fly but, as January 1973 turned into February, her single climbed one place higher to achieve Top 3.
From there though, she would begin to falter back towards the edge of the Top 10.
After this current chart position of No.12, there will be a much larger fall back to the midpoint, at No.25, as February turns into March, and from there it will be just a few more weeks at the lower end of the chart before she walks out altogether after the 24th of March after totting up a respectable 15 weeks on the U.K. Chart.
Of course, this song has had much talked about it,..
…something I’m not going to go into further here.
However, due to its longevity in the music buying public’s consciousness I suppose, in the Summer of 2014, the Official U.K. Chart apparently crowned this song with the honour of “The Ultimate Song of the ’70’s”.
