Help Me Make It Through The Night

At No.27, on “The Top 50 UK Singles Chart”, the week of my 3rd Birthday, is John Holt with Help Me Make It Through The Night.

This electrifying artist…

…is having a real deserved surge of popularity in his own right, after his success with The Paragons back in the sixties.

Whereas, back then, the tunes had been heavily influenced by the Rocksteady style, now he was helping to reinforce the foundation for what is becoming known as the Lovers Rock sound, blending that Rocksteady feel with the Philly and the earlier Chicago soul flowing from the USA.

No more is this evident than with this single, a new interpretation of Kris Kristofferson‘s classic song, which I’ve met once before already, when it had been a substantial hit for Gladys Knight and the Pips around this season a couple of years previously.

The single…

…had entered the UK chart back on the 8th of December last year at No.41, before it crept up into the Top 40 to sit at No.37 for the next couple of weeks of the festive period, after which it climbed effortlessly into the Top 30 at the dawn of this year when it landed at No.29.

Things really began to heat up during January, as it gained another 11 places to reach the Top 20, then another 6, before yet another 6 places broke it into the Top 10, to first sit at No.6, before it slipped to No.7, and then No.9 by the beginning of this month of February.

Last week witnessed it fall back to No.16, before this 11 place drop to this week’s position.

From here…

…it continues dropping back, first with another 8 places to No.35, then another 8, as the single’s journey enters into March, before it slows to slip another 3 positions to 46, until it falls away after the 15th of that month, leaving with an impressive tally of over 3 months of chart action to show for it.
