Donny Osmond

A Time For Us

At No.29, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Albums Chart”, the week of my 2nd Birthday, is Donny Osmond with A Time For Us.

Donny was back,..

…since his double appearance this time last year, with another set of familiar golden oldies that your mother and father remember the first time round, including some songs which had been made popular by such others as their old TV guardian Andy Williams.

This time however,..

…there was one major inescapable change which had occurred. An event so huge, that it would have sent shockwaves fluttering through hearts, and which would have cranked the desirable Love-O-Meters in teenage girls all the way up to eleven. And what was this major change?

Well, ladies and gentlemen, Donny’s voice had broken.

I’m guessing the shares in smelling salts skyrocketed around this time, and I’m sure there were some who were doubling down on schemes to try, in some desperate way, to get close enough to be in with a chance of marrying him. After all, the clock was ticking, and as the saying goes, “Time waits for no man”, and he was quickly turning into one.

Since his last couple of solo releases,..

…he’d been busy with his brothers, who had by now released, what big brother Alan describes as their magnum opus, “The Plan“, and followers of his brothers will be pleased to hear that they make an appearance here on this album, providing backing and instrumentation.

Production duties on the whole album are also taken up by Wayne; and I think little sister Marie helps out too.

The album…

…had first entered the chart at No.20, back in December last year in 1973, just in time for Christmas.

Unsurprisingly, by the following week, it had shot all the way up to No.5, and thanks to that manic shopping window of opportunity, it managed to scale up another place for the last week in December, making No.4 its peak position. I’m guessing this is when my cousin Sharon received her copy, as I remember seeing this album downstairs in their family record collection in the cabinet later on in the 1970’s, along with Killer Joe.

It stayed in the Top 10 as the year crossed over into 1974, before the descent really began into the middle of the chart, which is where I find it this week.

From here,..

…it will take a big drop of twenty places back to sit at No.49, before, after the 2nd of March, it falls out of the chart altogether.

The album will make one final appearance when it returns after a week off, on the 10th of that month, but so far, that’s it. A successful run, with 13 weeks in total in the bag, and I’m sure plenty more sack-loads of love letters arriving for him to open in response.
