Oh Yes! You’re Beautiful

Charting in the year of 1974, on the 17th of November, is Gary Glitter with the single Oh Yes! You’re Beautiful.

In a pun…

…of one of Gary’s earlier achievements, it seems it’s a case of hello, hello, he’s back again, but for my musical memories, this will be the final time. For Gary, he’ll have another 25-odd years before PC Plod comes knocking, and it will be “hello hello hello, what’s going on ‘ere then”.

In hindsight of those future events, and awareness of what his name alone now revolts with the British masses, I am torn to even enter this post into this body of work of mine. However, the completest in me feels it is important to include it. I know I can’t deny it. During this time in my life, he was never that far away from the airwaves, whether they be audible or visual.

As I’ve mentioned before, although I was aware of him, it wasn’t the most comfortable of experiences to witness.

This one,..

…to be completely honest, sticks in my memory due to my big sister Susan owning it, and even then, it’s not the sleazy grind of the A side that lures me, but the B side.

Back then,..

…I couldn’t even figure out what it was about the flip-side, or why it drew me in, but it just sounded different from most tracks I’d heard at the time. I’m also guessing that quite a few others may have felt the same too, as I personally don’t think the A side alone would have propelled the single to the heights it actually achieved.

There was something so hypnotic about it, the way it played out, which just made it stand out. If I’m perfectly straight with myself, I think, even now, it’s a bloody good track. It’s just a shame it had to be this particular individual who helped create it.

The single…

…enters the higher end of the chart, at No.16, on the same day as my previous musical memory, the 17th of November 1974, and by the following week, it’s in the Top 3.

Although it slips back a place in its third week to No.4, it recovers and lifts itself up a little higher to get to the No.2 position by the 8th of December, the highest peak it will achieve; and only being stopped in its tracks by the walrus of love himself, standing defiantly in his way.

From there,..

…it drops to the No.9 position the following week, but hangs onto that position for 3 consecutive weeks, not falling out of the Top 10, until the new year of 1975 has dawned.

After that, its descent becomes rapid, not even making it to the end of the month of January, as it falls out after the 25th of January having amassed 10 weeks in total.
