David Essex

Gonna Make You A Star

Charting in the year of 1974, on the 6th of October, is David Essex with the single Gonna Make You A Star.

Most probably,..

…the first really effective feel-good song I took notice of. This track, to me anyway, even at my young age, had such a good feel to it. To me it rolled with an honesty, a confidence, a playfulness, and a big assurance that everything was all OK in life.

It’s the first time I also took notice of David Essex, who to me, came across as such a great safe presence on the TV.

The single…

…quietly enters the chart on the 6th of October at No.42, but by week two, it’s cracked the Top 20, and by week three, done the same with the Top 10.

As the month comes to a close, and the nights draw in, it hits the Top 3, then gains another place to reach No.2.

On the 10th of November, it goes all the way, and hits the well deserved No.1 position, which is where it will stay for the rest of that month.

From there,..

…it slips back to No.2 once again at the beginning of December, drops out of the Top 10 during the middle of that month, manages to cling back up to the Top 20 after David’s new performance in a retrospective look back on the year for the Christmas edition of Top of the Pops, but then the single continues on its downward journey as it enters into the new year of 1975. Here it will fall away completely after the first day of February, having notched up a very satisfying 17 weeks in the chart altogether.
