Stevie Wonder
Superstition
At No.11, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart” on my 1st Birthday, is Stevie Wonder with “Superstition”.
A composition created from a power collaboration…
with Stevie and legendary guitarist Jeff Beck (the drum beat idea at the beginning and throughout the song was the work of Jeff), was streets ahead from his chart entry from the same time the year before, and showed him now at the start of his most creative golden era, with a song which would end up having a far greater lifespan than this chart in 1973.
This belter of a tune, one of my all time favourites later on in my life, had been a new entry on the U.K. Singles Chart back on the 28th of January when it landed at No.24.
With it’s second week having reached No.17, it now sat at No.11, the same positiion it held last week, and it’s highest position it would achieve in the U.K.
Next week will see it slip to No.14, then back another 4 places to No.18 before bigger steps back down the chart when it would eventually leave after the last day of March, completing a 9 week run.
But, you can’t keep a classic funk groove thing down…
…and so, 34 and a half years later, it creeps back into the (by now) Top 100 at No.89 for a weeks stay on the 14th of October 2007.
It appears again in the second half of September the following year when it stays for 2 weeks at No.76 and No.65 respectively.
A year and a week after that, it doubles up again to stay for 4 weeks this time, entering at No.69, dropping to No.98, climbing to No.81 and climbing again to No.78, before disappearing after the 17th of October 2009.
It’s back again at No.99 in the same year’s Christmas Chart week, then back again 7 months later for a weeks stay at No.64 from the 4th of July 2010, back again for a week at No.80, almost 2 years later, on the 8th of the April 2012, back again two months on at No.52 on the 10th of June, and back once again after another couple of months for a further three weeks from the 26th of August, where it visits position Numbers 75, 68 and 84 before leaving again in mid September.
It enters the chart again in 2014 for yet another week, this time right on the edge of the chart when it comes in at No.100 on the 13th of July and lastly (so far) it shows up a year and two months later, on the 18th of September when it charts once more, this time at No.84, then the following week drops to No.98 before finally leaving after the 1st of October 2015.
With a running total so far of half a year under its belt, it certainly has been an enduring track, and one I believe will return again at some point in the future.
