At No.22, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart” on my 1st Birthday, is Billy Paul with “Me & Mrs Jones”.

Keeping the soul groove theme going…

…after the previous entries is another laid back soul classic which was inspired by the two writers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff witnessing regular daily meetings between a gentleman and (15 minutes later) a lady, who would meet at the little bar downstairs in the Schubert Building, which was where their record company was located. They’d go to the jukebox and put on the same songs each day and just be together in the booth before going their separate ways again.

Billy had entered the chart 7 weeks previously,..

…when he landed at No.42 on the 7th of January and by the 21st of that month he’s broken into the Top 20 at No.16.

Climbing 4 places higher the following week, to achieve this single’s highest position at No.12, it stayed at that position for a further week while the year moved towards Valentines Day.

Slipping 4 places back to No.16 the week after that, we find him this week slipping back outside the Top 20.

A further couple of weeks will see the single fall back further until, after the 10th of March, the affair with the U.K. Charts will be over.
