Elvis Presley

Always On My Mind

Elvis Presley

At No.31, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart” on my 1st Birthday, is Elvis Presley with “Always On My Mind”.

Elvis was back…

…after visiting the charts the same time the year before when I was born. This time, even though the 2 songs in this package weren’t necessarily penned by Elvis, they seemed uncannily autobiographical given his personal circumstances at the time.

This latest classic Elvis song…

…may be heading out of the U.K. charts this day in 1973, but it certainly wouldn’t be last time we’d hear this song there.

The story starts on the 10th of December 1972 when Elvis enters the chart at No.33.
For the last few weeks of the year, he begins to climb steadily up the chart until, on the eve of his 38th birthday, on the 7th of January 1973, he’ll break into the Top 10 at 10.

The following week would see the single climb one place higher where it would reach it’s highest position at No.9 before beginning a gradual descent back down the charts, which is where we find it now, just falling back outside the Top 30.

Next week he’ll drop down to No.40 before slipping another 9 places to No.49 at the beginning of March with him waving goodbye after the 10th.

Jump forward 24 years,..

…and the single makes a return to the U.K. chart Top 100 on the 18th of May 1997, where it lands straight in at No.13.

The single will spend the rest of May in the Top 20 before it begins to fall away again, falling out of the chart after the 28th of June.

Just over a month later, and before the 20th anniversary of his passing, the single will return for a further week from the 27th of July at No.94.

After another week off, it will pay one more visit that year, when it charts at No.97 on the 20th anniversary week of his death.

At the time of writing,..

…there is one more jump through time, another 10 years, and this single reappears again. This time, again for one week only, on the 25th of November 2007, where it jumps straight into the Top 20 again at No.17 before disappearing just as fast.

And so I think you can safely say, with a chart activity span (so far) of a week shy of 35 years, this single definitely has an enduring quality.
