Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone
At No.33, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Singles Chart” on my 1st Birthday, is The Temptations with “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone”
The Temptations were back again…
…during my birthday week with another classic Tamla Motown track and, if the 12-inch single was a thing back then, this would have been the perfect example for one, with the album version coming in at a whopping 12 minutes.
Even the 7 inch single was pushing the limits, with the edit coming in at just under 7 minutes in length.
This latest release,..
…which was in fact a cover version from a fellow Motown group called The Undisputed Truth who had released their version back in the Spring of 1972 in the U.S. (not here in the U.K.), was nearing the end of it’s chart run when we meet it here.
The Temptations had entered the chart with their version during the second week of 1973 at No.37, and by the third week of the year, was up into the Top 20 at No.18.
By the single’s 3rd week…
in the chart the week after, on the 21st of January, it had reached it’s highest position of No.14 and for the next couple of weeks it kept inside the Top 20.
Last week it dropped down to No.25, and this week it sits outside the Top 30.
Next week will be it’s last week on the U.K. chart as it slips down to No.48 before rolling out, completing 8 weeks after the 3rd of March.
