Do You Remember? My Memories from My Musical Road in my 1st Year.

The 20th of February 1972 to the 19th of February 1973

Ok so I’m not even 1 yet. What do I know about music at this stage of my little life?

Now, I suppose I could have heard the next few songs via osmosis or something but when I hear them again there is something that I get from somewhere. Could’ve been years later on the radio I suppose but they were released in this year. Sooo, for this and probably the next year too, I’m taking it that they went in there somehow when I was on my way to my first birthday.

The Chiffons

Sweet Talking Guy

The Chiffons

This one sounds like it belongs in the Sixties, even the Fifties…

…and you’d be right in thinking that – It was originally released in 1966.

Back then, it had entered into the U.K. Chart on the Stateside label on the 26th May 1966 at No. 48, and climbed slowly to achieve it’s top position of No.31 on the 30th June, finally leaving the chart, with a total of 8 weeks, after the 20th of July 1966.

So what’s it doing here in 1972?

Well I was amazed to find it was actually re-issued this year.

It re-entered the chart, this time on the London label, on the 12th of March 1972 at No.50

It must have been played a lot for the record company to justify it being issued again, and it did well too, taking 6 weeks to climb to No.4 in the UK chart, which is a hell of a lot better than the 31st  placing it got when originally released back in 1966.

It stayed at the No.4 position for a second week before falling further down the chart.

This time though, it managed to complete a much more satisfying 14 weeks on the chart, 6 of those in the Top 10, before leaving after the 17th of June 1972.

Now, I don’t know what happened with this one…

The Re-issue dates it as 1969 and the A side is actually “One Fine Day”. You can tell that from the numbers on the record label.

It may have been that it was meant to have been “One Fine Day” which they intended to release, however, from the amount of airplay the flip side got, it may have pushed the single back up the charts.

Of course this is pure speculation on my part, but this wouldn’t be the only time a B side would get a single in the charts.

The Official U.K. Chart states that it is “Sweet Talkin’ Guy”which is the charted song for 1966 and 1972, “One Fine Day” had charted before with a different B-Side back in the Summer of 1963.

They’re both fantastic high quality songs anyway and they both deserve the recognition.

For whatever reason, it holds a place in my head and heart nonetheless, probably from hearing it in on my mother’s kitchen radio.
