Simon And Garfunkel
Bridge Over Troubled Water
At No.23, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Albums Chart” on the day I am born, is Simon And Garfunkel with “Bridge Over Troubled Water”.
Now, if you’re going to go out on a high, then this album is the way to do it.
The regular sight and sound of Paul Simon’s songwriting along with Art Garfunkel’s vocal talents had come to a close, not that the record buying public were going to accept that fact in any hurry.
The album had shot straight in at No.1 like a bullet 2 years previously, almost to the day actually, on the 15th of February 1970, where it stayed for 13 consecutive weeks, before letting somebody else have a look in May of that year, and then regaining the top spot a few weeks later.
In fact, the album totted up an astounding total of 33 weeks at No.1 in the U.K Album Charts between it’s entry and September the following year of 1971.
By the time it got to this chart on the day i was born in 1972, it had only left the Top 10 twice, and that was again back in 1971, when November had turned into December, and it had spent 2 weeks at No.11.
Looking forward after this chart, it won’t go outside that threshold again for another 5 months until the end of July 1972.
Even after that, it will spend every week (apart from one) for the rest of this year in the Top 20.
Of course, with this initial track record (pardon the pun), this LP had plenty more life in it yet and we will catch up on it’s progress when the new year of 1973 arrives…
I’ve created my own separate playlists for both Sides 1 and 2 of this album with (I hope) the correct versions and the original track sequencing order for the U.K. release.
