The Concert For Bangla Desh
At No.11, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Albums Chart” on the day I am born, is “The Concert For Bangla Desh”.
This outstanding benefit concert…
…isn’t so much a precursor to Live Aid which will happen 13 years later, but more akin to the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert which also combined ethnic musicians with popular music acts a further 3 years after Bob Geldof’s iconic Global Jukebox.
But, back in the early 1970’s, before both of those iconic gigs, George Harrison (with a little help from his friends) got there first and presented it here as a 3-Album Box Set “The Concert For Bangla Desh”.
This triple live album document from the show recorded at Madison Square Garden back in August was currently enjoying a small but powerful run in the U.K. Album Chart.
George’s successfully planned multi-act concert to focus awareness on the atrocities in that part of the world had first shot into the chart Top Ten just over a month before, on the 16th of January at No.10, and by its second week had gone all the way and hit the No.1 spot, which is a major achievement for a 3-disc boxset.
We find it here this week after just leaving the Top Ten.
The album will spend a further 7 consecutive weeks in the chart, before bowing out after the 15th of April, completing a total run of 13 weeks altogether.
P.S. One last thing,
…does the image on pages 51 and 52 of the accompanying book look familiar?
That’s because the image of Page 51 was used as the cover for Bob Dylan’s latest Greatest Hits album at the time.
I’ve done my best to create my own separate playlists for all records 1, 2 and 3 and separated them into their respective sides (1,2,3,4,5 and 6) of this album with (I hope) the correct versions and the original track sequencing order for the U.K. release.
However, there was difficulty obtaining a suitable playlist for Side 1, with one piece of footage which has the only example of the introduction, but only playing half of track 2. I’ve therefore added another track 2 which has the complete version after it, although there is some extra applause tacked onto the end.
I’m afraid I couldn’t find Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’In The Wind” either (Record 3, Side 5, Track 3) which was really disappointing.
As for the rest of the album, it’s obviously been sourced from a later Compact Disc or equivalent music source hence why the ends of certain sides stop abruptly.
Until I can utilise my own way of bringing you the best example of the original released material, this will have to do.
Apart from those issues, all records and sides of this album are (I hope) complete and sequenced correctly.
Record 1, Side 1
Record 1, Side 2
Record 2, Side 3
Record 2, Side 4
Record 3, Side 5
Record 3, Side 6
Many thanks go to the following YouTube Channels for providing the chance to hear the tracks, to form as close to the complete original album that I can get, so that together we can experience both sides of this album release, as it was intended, once again.
