Andy Williams

Andy Williams’ Greatest Hits

Andy Williams

At No.33, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Albums Chart” on the day I am born, is Andy Williams with “Andy Williams’ Greatest Hits”.

The first (and in my humble opinion, the best) Greatest Hits LP from Andy Williams.

I knew of Andy Williams only by the songs played on the radio while I grew up admiring his voice. Nobody I knew had any of his records as far as I can recall but I remember loving “Can’t Get Used To Losing You” especially.

It would be many years later when I chanced upon a copy of this very LP and it instantly became one of my all time easy listening favourite albums.

Andy’s Greatest Hits collection was no stranger to the UK Album Chart by this date in February.

The album had begun its journey back on the 5th of April 1970 and had gone straight in at Number 2. The only album it couldn’t topple will appear later on in this chart.

After a few journeys up and down, it would eventually achieve No.1 status on the 29th of November and, after one step back for a week, would claim the No.1 Album prize again for Christmas 1970 and the New Year of 1971.

In fact Andy would occupy almost the whole year of 1971 with various placings for this album, only leaving the U.K. Chart for a few weeks of it.

The current run, which took in this chart in February, was another 12 week streak which had begun mid-December of that year of 1971 and will end at the beginning of March 1972.

Again, after a short time away, his Greatest Hits will chart for the rest of that month of March, before just paying a couple of weekly visits in mid-April and the beginning of June.

Another 12 week streak will find the album charting non-stop through to the end of Summer and into the beginning of Autumn before it’s last week-only showings that year at the beginning of October and once more, just going into November.

The album will appear for one final weekly visit a few years later at the end of February 1975.

To me, this album is one of those which is perfectly produced and impeccably sequenced. “May Each Day”, the closer, a fitting end and beautifully written.

Since this release, there have been many other Greatest Hits released by Andy. However, that means that this (in my opinion best, but then I’m biased as I now own a copy of this album) Greatest Hits compilation has been superseded by later modified editions which are not this one. As yet there is no source online to stream this particular album that I have found.

Therefore, I’ve created my own separate playlists for both Sides 1 and 2 of this LP with (I hope) the correct versions and the original track sequencing order for the U.K. release.
