At No.42, on the “The Top 50 U.K. Albums Chart” on the day I am born, is Gilbert O’Sullivan with “Himself”.
Gilbert’s debut album…
…had first had a glimpse of the chart back on the 19th of September the year before in 1971. Back then he’d only achieved No.44 and his presence only lasted that one solitary week.
It wasn’t until the week leading up to Christmas that he would find “Himself” to be back in the UK Album Charts once again.
Just as before, he entered outside the Top 40, but this time he’d be in for the long run with the album nudging into the Top Ten, before falling back a bit, and then climbing again.
We find him this week in one of those lulls but from next week he’ll be heading for the Top Ten again and by the beginning of April, will have achieved his highest position with this album at No.5.
This wouldn’t mean that he was leaving the chart anytime soon.
For this run alone, Gilbert will be a constant presence through, not just the Winter, but through the Spring and Summer too.
In fact, the break from the chart will eventually happen at the beginning of October, not that it will be the end of his journey.
So successful will this album become, that we’ll pick up its journey in its next year.
