The Chelsea Football Team
Blue Is The Colour
At No.15, on the the U.K. Top 50 Singles Chart the day I am born, is The Chelsea Football Team with “Blue Is The Colour”.
A staple of any Chelsea football fan’s repertoire on the Stamford Bridge terraces to this day,..
…and still remains the club’s signature anthem, played on their home turf, and at every cup final they play.
The club were still in high spirits…
…as they looked forward to their upcoming match with Stoke City in the League Cup Final, just under a fortnight away.
Two years ago, the team had managed to win the FA Cup for the first time in their 65 year history, and last year they’d won their first European honour, the Cup Winners’ Cup.
For now, it was time for the boys in blue to sing a new song.
The task of writing this new tune went to lyricist Rod McQueen (real name David Balfe), and Daniel Boone (who previously went by the name of Peter Lee Stirling, and before even that, his actual name of Peter Green (not to be mixed up with Fleetwood Mac’s Peter Green)).
Daniel had co-written a few successful hits over the past ten years, including a couple for the Merseybeats, and also a tune for Eurovision runner up Kathy Kirby.
Now Daniel was lining up the Chelsea team for a new kind of session.
The players on this musical field included:
John Dempsey – Defender – who’d moved from Fulham to Chelsea in 1969.
David Webb – Defender – who’d moved over from Southampton to Chelsea in 1968.
Marvin Hinton – Defender – who’d moved from Charlton Athletic to Chelsea in 1963.
Stewart Houston – Left Back – who had begun his career with Chelsea in 1967. This would be his final year with the team.
Charlie Cooke – Left Back – who’d moved from Dundee to Chelsea in 1966.
Eddie McCreadie – Left Back – who moved over to Chelsea from East Stirlingshire in 1962.
Paddy Mulligan – Right Back – who had moved over from Shamrock Rovers to Chelsea in 1969.
John Hollins – Full Back / Midfielder – who’d risen from the Chelsea Youth Team in 1963.
Tommy Baldwin – Midfielder / Forward – who’d moved from Arsenal to Chelsea in 1966.
Alan Hudson – Midfielder – who had begun his senior career with Chelsea in 1969.
Steve Kember – Midfielder – who’d moved from Crystal Palace to Chelsea last season in 1971.
Peter Houseman – Winger – who’d been a player in this team since he’d moved over from the Youth team in 1963.
Chris Garland – Forward – who’d moved over from Bristol City to Chelsea last season.
Peter Osgood – Striker – who had begun his senior career with Chelsea in 1964 since moving from the Youth Team.
and Ron Harris – Defender – who’d moved over from the Chelsea Youth team in 1962. Otherwise known as Chopper. He’d also captained Chelsea to the FA Cup and UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup successes.
Their new anthem, a New Entry this week,..
…was just starting on it’s 12 week journey into the U.K. Singles Chart in February 1972.
It will move pretty fast too, getting to it’s top No.5 position in another 2 weeks at the beginning of March.
However, just like the team’s result against Stoke City, this team won’t be able to reach the top. And so this single will begin to fall forlornly back down the numbers, although it won’t be until mid-May when the crowds will die down enough for it to exit the chart.
