Bee Gees

My World

Bee Gees with Geoff Bridgford

At No.16, on the the U.K. Top 50 Singles Chart the day I am born, is the Bee Gees with “My World”.

The Brothers Gibb…

were enjoying the start of 2 weeks at their highest position for this single on the UK Chart.

Now, for those of you out there that don’t know,..

…and this is pulled directly from the Bee Gees’ official website www.beegees.com

“Though it is widely believed that the Bee Gees first got their name from being the Brothers Gibb, this meaning did not come until a few years after their founding. When the brothers moved to Australia in 1958, they began playing on the radio with friends Bill Goode and Bill Gates. The groups name was originally The BG’s – contrived from the common initials between Barry Gibb, Bill Goode, and Bill Gates. The name then evolved from The BG’s to the Bee Gees which eventually came to mean the Brothers Gibb!”

Anyway, back to this current single.

The group, at this point, were on the cusp of change yet again.

It had been almost 2 years since the band of brothers had reunited, after their impressive success as a 5-piece, which eventually took its toll, leading them to take a break from each other at the end of the 1960’s.

Since those days,..

…they had explored their own solo careers and writing songs apart. In the case of Robin, quite successfully. But they eventually missed the bond and the special magic that manifested when their three heads and hearts were in tune as one.

As well as the three of them, they also decided to welcome on board drummer Geoff Bridgford, who Maurice had worked with while involved in his own solo material during the group’s hiatus.

One of the first compositions as a reinvigorated 4-piece…

…that Robin and Barry wrote, “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart”, would be like a musical love letter to each other after the estrangement they had felt, before this reconciliation.

When the time came to perform the song live, it would include the debut appearance of Geoff playing with the band.

Although it never charted here in the U.K., it did hit No.1 in the United States, and also gave them their first Grammy nomination.

This latest single,..

…written backstage at a TV studio in Birmingham, England, where they were appearing on the game show “The Golden Shot”, would be cut from the same musical cloth as that previous reunion single.

It also bookends Geoff’s career on drums with the group, as this will be his last recording he’ll be involved in with the brothers.

The single had begun its U.K. Chart journey…

…almost a month ago, when it landed at No.38 on the 23rd of January.

They’d hit the Top 20 two weeks later, then climbed gradually for another couple of weeks, to get to this juncture.

They’ll enjoy another week at this same position next week, then one final week in the Top 20 the week after, before falling further back during March; eventually departing, after completing 9 weeks on the U.K. Chart, after the 25th of that month.
