Colin Blunstone

Say You Don’t Mind

At No.28, on the the U.K. Top 50 Singles Chart the day I am born, is Colin Blunstone with “Say You Don’t Mind”.

An eventual Top 20 hit single for Colin,..

…not that that had quite happened yet.

With a voice since described by the Bangles’ Susanna Hoffs, publicly stating to Colin personally, while inducting his old group the Zombies into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2019,..

“The tone and timbre of it is like silk and velvet and linen woven through each and every syllable you sing. Your voice is just plain sexy!”

…it’s no wonder…

…he ventured into a solo career after the break-up of the band in 1968.

Looking back…

…over the Zombies end, Colin reminisced…

“I didn’t know if I really even wanted to get back into the music business.

I was so saddened by the demise of The Zombies. I wasn’t sure I wanted to put myself through that again.”

Quickly coming to the conclusion…

…that furthering his music vocation was more appealing than his dabblings in a back-up career in the insurance business, he’d first attempted to continue his singing profession under the pseudonym of Neil MacArthur, in an attempt to distance himself from his former Zombie shadow.

With his coming to terms with his own self-healing, and reverting back to his familiar namesake, he therefore decided to use his musicianship and writing prowess to create a personal diary-type concept album based on his life’s evolvement, encompassing both recent career and personal break-ups, entitled ‘One Year’.

This latest single to be pulled from the album was originally written by ex-Moody Blues frontman, and now Wings guitarist, Denny Laine back in 1967, and had been accompanied back then with a string arrangement by session musician John Paul Jones, who had since joined Led Zeppelin.

The song had been recorded several times since, even by Denny himself, but had failed to garner any success.

It had even been suggested by Colin…

…as a track for the Zombies, while they were still together, but nothing ever came of it.

Now, revisiting the song, and harnessing an unusual new arrangement by classical composer of TV and film Christopher Gunner, using strings and vocals only, Colin decided to place the song at the end of his new autobiographical album.

Although the single was the third to be released from his debut LP,..

…it ended up being the first to enter the U.K. Charts, with this current week being its third in the Top 50.

The song had previously entered at No.47 on the 6th of February, before climbing to No.31 a week later.

It will be another week after this week’s placing, that the single will break the Top 20 barrier by moving eleven places up to No.17, and edge up another two after a further week to reach its limit of No.15 on the 12th March, before beginning to fall away.

Its ninth and final week will be at the beginning of April.
